Toyota’s Tacoma X-Runner Concept

At the 2023 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Toyota unveiled a captivating concept truck that caught our attention. While known for their toughness off-road, this particular concept, called the Tacoma X-Runner, is designed for street performance. It features a lowered suspension, increased power, and various modifications.
Under the hood, the Tacoma X-Runner concept boasts a potent twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine, borrowed from the larger Tundra model. With 421 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, this engine outperforms the most powerful setup of the 2024 Tacoma, which is a hybrid four-cylinder with 326 horsepower.
To optimize performance, Toyota equipped the Tacoma X-Runner with a solid axle from the Tundra, complete with a 4.30:1 final drive and an electronic locking differential for excellent torque distribution to the rear wheels. The exhaust pipe has been rerouted to enhance the truck’s aesthetic appeal.
Beneath the striking exterior, the Tacoma X-Runner features an air suspension system borrowed from the Tundra, allowing the truck to ride at a lower height while still maintaining its carrying capacity. The control arms have been customized to accommodate the lowered stance, and the frame has been reinforced while the track width has been widened by approximately three inches. Stiffer springs and 2.5-inch Bilstein shocks enhance the truck’s handling capabilities. It rides on sleek Lacks Enterprises 21-inch carbon-fiber wheels with forged aluminum centers and Michelin 285/45R21 Sport Tires.
The display truck’s Speedway Blue finish pays homage to the original Tacoma X-Runner showcased at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show. While we can’t confirm if a production version with similar performance enhancements will be released, we eagerly anticipate the possibility of seeing a vehicle like this on the streets in the near future.
